SUPERBOWL LVI - NBC SPORTS

2022

DESCRIPTION

The SuperBowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the globe. It's wide exposure and heavy graphical content,  brings the perfect opportunity for visual innovation. It allows for different artistic disciplines to converge from graphics and motion to architecture and music, it is one of the only events that simply combines the best.

THE REQUEST

We were approached by the team at NBC sports to design the core and structural graphic concept for the event. Such task consisted mainly in defining a "home" in which all the graphics would live. The base with which the graphic language would communicate through the show.

The main approach to this project became architectural, we needed to create an architectural environment in which SuperBowl LVI would live.

As our role in this project was concept design, once our concept was approved by NBC, we delivered the design and 3D assets to the NBC team for them to develop the show graphics based on such concept using their internal graphics department.

THE CONCEPT

SuperBowl LVI was particularly special since it was the first time since the COVID 19 pandemic that a live audience would attend the event, this ignited the idea of the look being "location driven" it needed to hint the location of the game in the graphic look.  The event took place in Sofi Stadium and the creative team at NBC wanted to "hint" Sofi structure as well as maintaining the massive scale of such venue. They wanted it to feel big.

In our visual exploration we decided to use the football shape as the base for our structural design. Even though the project became heavily architectural, it was important for us to keep focus in the game.

footballShape

The football shape became the main blueprint for the structure of the build. Its shape would allow us to create 2 different unique environments connected by a central hallway.

STRUCTURE

The 3 main sections of the environment had the purpose of being a structural analogy of a football game. Two contrasting architectural styles (angular & organic) representing each team, joined by a middle and impartial area (main hall) representing the field itself. Each structure evokes the concept of motion in it, so the structures are following a dynamic pattern by rotation, translating and/or scaling as they appear through the space.

Aside from that concept, such structure would allow the NBC team to explore a wide variety of shapes and "areas" to play with during the game and potentially the rest of the season.

THE ANGULAR ROOM

This section to the right of the structure was meant to signify the visitors team, rougher and more aggressive in its shapes, we wanted to evoke the uncertainty characteristic from the visitors at a game.  We created a series of angular beams that create a tunnel from which you can feel a progressive rotation as they enter the main hall.

THE ORGANIC ROOM

This section to the right of the structure was meant to signify the local team, more inviting and certain in its shapes, we wanted to evoke the strength and determination from a local team at a game.  We created a series of rounded beams that connect on both ends of the section.

THE MAIN HALL

This main hall is the "playing field", is where the entrance to both other sections is and their common ground. We wanted to create a wide spacious area in which the light could be a main protagonist. We created two main "wings" taken from the curvature of the Sofi stadium structure held by a series of rectangular panels/beams.

SCALE

It was one of NBC requests to make sure that the scale of the place would be big. They didn't want it to feel closed or small. We did several iterations of the design to make sure that massive scale request would be met. Below some examples:

CONTENT DISPLAY

Even though our main task was to create the "home" concept for the graphic look. As an extra part of our concept design, we explored a few ways to present editorial content in the foreground, below are a few preliminary images and proposals of that process. NBC Sports internal graphics team designed the content panels that aired.
